3. Modelling the Assets Part 1

It was time for me to get started making the assets for the airport environment. I have begun the process by starting with the ticket machine gate,

Figure 1 – Airport Security Gate (Secunet, 2023)
Figure 2 – Bordeaux Airport Gates (PassengerSelfService.com, 2022)

I’ve followed the image clearly to try and replicate something like this.

Like with the previous asset, I gathered a few reference images to aid in my design of a standard check-in desk.

Figure 3 – Front view of an airport check-in desk. (skyNext, 2019)
Figure 4 – A closer, side view of a check-in desk. (Alibaba.com, 2023)

I followed through the design of an existing check-in desk to model something like this, including the passport scanner and computer.

After texturing the asset, I exported it into Unreal and expanded the geometry to accommodate them. I also mirrored the duplicated asset and aligned it next to the original.

I also mirrored the duplicated asset and aligned it next to the original.

For the individual rocks, I have used a script that easily saves a lot of time (3DWolf, 2017; rockGen Maya Script.rar, 2017). I saved the script in Maya’s preferences folder for it to appear.

I typed the rockGen script to get this window to pop up. Then I tested it out to create some varying rocks in sizes and scale.

UV’ing rocks would be approached differently to doing an automatic UV unwrap. I applied a spherical projection onto the mesh before I unwrapped it so that the textures would wrap around the mesh. (hansfrans47, 2016).

I compared the spherical UV’ed mesh with an automatic UV’ed rock, and the results show less seams on the top mesh.

Going back to the airport landscape, I gathered a few more reference images of assets that need to be modelled, beginning with the immigration desk.

Figure 6 – A single immigration desk (Dreamstime, 2023)

With it being symmetrical, I only had to model half of the asset and mirror it across to get this nice-looking model ready to be textured.

Next up was the metal detector that would act as part of the security checkpoint that passengers will go through.

Figure 8 – Pair of metal detectors with luggage scanners (Jirasukhanont, 2017)

The supports were easy to accomplish, as I only had to work with a cylinder, cutting one half and mirroring it across. I made sure to detail the roof from the front and added the baggage area of the asset.

Asset Creation – Airplane

Next on the list were the airplanes that would touch down and fly out of the airport. I wanted to go big and try to model something along the lines of what my reference images tell me.

Figure 9 – A grounded airplane. (Gintaras,2019)
Figure 10 – Airplane vector image (VectorStock Media, 2023)
Figure 11 – Airplane Engine (Duivis, 2018)

I will be following a tutorial to make this type of asset (Art MZ, 2021). The first thing I did was flip a cylinder 90 degrees and scale it out to make the torso of the aircraft. I then selected the face on either side to make the wing before modelling the jet engines and the upper wing.

The detailing starts with adding the doors and windows of the aircraft before adding the wheels for the plane to touch down on the runway.

After using Substance to texture the airplane thoroughly and appropriately, I plugged them into the asset within Maya and exported it into the landscape.
